Science Hubs for Advanced Research & Education with Africa
Empowering Italo-African academic cooperation through innovation, education, and research.
About the project
SHARE_Africa (Science Hubs for Advanced Research & Education with Africa) is an initiative designed to strengthen scientific cooperation and education between Italian and African higher education institutions. Funded under the Italian National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) and supported by the European Union’s Next Generation EU program, the project is implemented by the IHEA Foundation (Italian Higher Education with Africa) and six Italian universities: University of Bologna, University of Florence, University of Naples “Federico II”, University of Padua, Sapienza University of Rome, and Politecnico di Milano.
The project aims to establish Italo-African Science Hubs as centers for long-term collaboration in research and education, promoting peer-to-peer knowledge exchange and fostering science diplomacy. SHARE_Africa focuses on two strategic regions—Tunisia and Ethiopia—and targets early-career African academics, enabling them to act as ambassadors of knowledge and research collaboration between the continents.
SHARE_Africa also develops a high-quality educational portfolio through co-designed inter-university courses, including six Blended Executive Programmes in areas such as Sustainable Energy, Precision Agriculture, Cultural Heritage, One Health, and Industrial Ecology. These programs integrate teaching and research while supporting local academic institutions and empowering young academics with advanced, internationally relevant skills.
Overall, SHARE_Africa contributes to international cooperation, innovation in education, and the development of sustainable research networks aligned with the broader goals of European-African collaboration.
Origin & Scope
Drawing on successful initiatives such as a Specialising Master in Ethiopia (60 ECTS) and five intensive advanced courses in Ethiopia and Tunisia, the project builds on a solid foundation of collaboration with more than 130 young African academics.
Targeting Early Career Academicians, SHARE_AFRICA focuses on fostering long-term impact by training future Italo-African Education and Research Ambassadors, with focal hubs in Tunisia and Ethiopia, covering the MENA Region and the Horn of Africa.
Our Vision
To foster the creation of Italo-African Science Hubs, supporting long-term cooperation between African and Italian academic systems and generating policy recommendations that elevate science diplomacy in Italy-Africa relations.
